Update  29 July  2015

Art Appreciation trip to Penzance.

Eight of us went to Penlee HouseGallery on 16th July to view the Cornish Light Exhibition.Unfortunately the train we were travelling on was 20 minutes late sowe had a rushed visit because certain members needed a restorativecup of coffee before entering the gallery!

The exhibition is quite small but veryinteresting and brings together works that were last shown togetherin 1894. There are many from city galleries around the country andsome from private collections. It celebrates and gives an overview ofthe “new wave of British art, sweeping in from a remote, littleknown area of the country”. These are the words of the curator ofthe exhibition held in Nottingham in 1894. It is well worth a visitand runs until 5th September. I shall certainly visitagain.

As we had booked a table for lunch ourvisit was curtailed. We tried out Mackerel Sky in New Street and allof us can thoroughly recommend it.

Future Plans

We shall not be having any more trips in Augustdue to traffic. We are holding a planning meeting on 11thSeptember at 2.30 in Lostwithiel Community Centre where we shallplan, drink tea and coffee, eat cake and chat.

We have a trip planned for 16thSeptember to Truro. Details shown in our programme of events.

There is also an exhibition at Royal CornwallMuseum in Truro that I have just had details of. It concerns thehistory of the Vyvian family, many of whom are buried in St Winnowchurchyard.

Pat Stearn. 29th July.

Update  12th  March 2015

Trip to Port Eliot

Four of us enjoyed a trip to Port Eliot on 11thMarch. We arrived at 1.30 and visited St Germans Church. We spenthalf an hour viewing fantastic stained glass windows, many by WilliamMorris. There are plenty of display boards giving the history of thechurch from the earliest times. We could have spent longer but thechurch was so cold we were glad to get outside where it was warmer!

St Germans Church

St German's Priory Church

A short stroll through the churchyard broughtus to the main entrance of Port Eliot house, where we received acordial welcome from one of the stewards. She gave us an informativetalk about the paintings in the entrance lobby and explained thatthere is an extensive collection of works by Sir Joshua Reynolds. These paintings are now owned by Plymouth City Council and weregifted to them to pay off death duties from the present Earl’sfather. Handed on to another knowledgeable steward we were shown someremarkable furniture along with some interesting nick nacks whichhave been collected down the years by various members of the family. Two small sitting rooms were next viewed and then the grand salonwith its barrel vaulted roof. This runs the length of the house andwas originally the refectory when the house was a monastery. Some ofus noted the very well stocked bar! Bet that wasn’t there in theMiddle Ages! Finally we came to the famous round room with the frescoby Lenkiewicz. A truly amazing work and unfinished. Several familymembers are depicted, also servants and local celebrities, plus allof his wives! Slightly incongruously the Earl’s beloved HarleyDavidson motorbike rests in one of the window alcoves! The roundcarpet which fits the room perfectly was purchased by the currentCountess from Hampton Court. She also purchased some of the carpetrunners from Lanhydrock House when they were no longer consideredgood enough by the National Trust.

Port Eliot Orangery

We were then able to refresh ourselves with teaand cake and left just as the rain started.  This trip would interest several U3A groups, namely the Garden visits group and the Walkers group.

For our own group may suggest that we try toarrange another trip in June when we can spend time exploring thegarden and perhaps have a picnic tea there. If we go on a Monday thekitchen is open which has a huge array of copper pans. It is also thefavoured place for Roo the whippet to hang out. How about going onMonday 8th June.
