Ride on November 19th from Bugle to Goss Moor

Lostwithiel U3A Cycling Group

Five members of the group all with questionable mentality set off from Bugle in the pouring rain in the hope that it would fine up later. Two hours later it was still raining and all five riders were extremely wet, fed up, uncomfortable and wishing that they had stayed at home even if only to clean the oven which would probably have been more enjoyable.

Having said that we made the effort and it will be something to talk about in the future that is if they are still talking to me.  Don’t forget that we would love to see any new bikers joining the group all you need is a bike and some waterproof gear!

Update: 24th August 2014

Cycling Group Ride on Wednesday 20th August

Eleven riders met at the Innis Downs Roundabout and cycled down the old A30 to Victoria.
Lostwithiel U3A Cycling

Continuing to Roche and passing the famous Roche Rock which led to our lunch stop at Carbis Wharf on the Bugle Road. We sat at two well placed picnic tables outside the converted Great Wheal Prosper clay drying works which is on the same site as the Carbis Brick Kilns. After lunch we cycled along some very narrow but interesting lanes which led to the back of the two huge wind turbines recently erected near the new A30 services at the Victoria junction. Under the new A30 and on to the old A30 road which led us back to our cars at Innis Downs. Once again the weather was good for a most enjoyable ride.

Anyone who may be interested in joining the cycling group please contact Brian Marriott 01208 87104.  The rides we undertake are not too strenuous and we try to find routes without too many hills.

Update: 25th July  2014

Innis Downs to Roche Rock.

 Wednesday 20th August  -  10 Miles

The ride is mostly on quiet roads some with good cycle lanes. There are a few small hills but nothing that we can’t handle. I have just done the ride and I thought that it was great. I am sure that you will not be disappointed.

This ride starts from Innis Downs Roundabout. Park up the road to the left of the roundabout you will see a few cars parked there. We will then cycle down the old A30 – good cycle lanes on this quiet road.  At Victoria we turn left to Roche, ride through the village and stop to have a look at Roche Rock a little further down the road I saw a couple of well placed picnic tables outside  some holiday apartments. I intend to ask  for permission to stop there for lunch.

Roche Rock

After lunch we ride along quiet back lanes  to join the Old A30 near Innis Downs.

As ever I hope that you can make it would be great if you could let me know either way and let me have your mobile number.

 Thanks

 Brian

Lostwithiel U3A Cycling Group May 2014
(Click on image for larger view)

On Wednesday 21st May 8 members of the group met at the Borough Arms Car park and cycled to Wadebridge as our second leg of the Camel Trail. The weather was ordered specially for the occasion and it didn’t disappoint – it was glorious.  We had a nice easy ride to Wadebridge were we had lunch, saitting on a wall overlooking the river and putting the world to rights. This is a great thing about this group, not only do we enjoy the bike ride but we have  good conversation on route.  After lunch we returned to Bodmin possibly a little slower than the ride their. We also welcomed a new group member,  Malcolm Haycox who must be good because he was in the lead a good part of the time. Well done Malcolm.

U3A BIKERS HAVE BEEN PEDALLING AGAIN

On Wednesday 16th Apri six members of the Cycling Group and their bikes had a great ride around the Multi Use Trail which winds its way around the little known expanse of Goss Moor.

Lostwithiel U3A Cycling Group - Goss Moor Cornwall

The weather was perfect and the nature reserve was looking at its best.  On the way round we stopped to look at the source of the river Fal which then flows eighteen kilometres before reaching the Ocean between Pendennis Point and St Anthony Head.  This is one of the great things about cycling, not only are you getting enjoyable exercise and good company but you also learn things on route.

Our next ride in May will be published nearer the time – possible starting from Lostwithiel.

A BRILLIANT TRIP !  TUE. 5TH MARCH

The Devoran to Portreath old Mining-Trail. South to North Cornish coast.
U3A Cyclists from Lostwithiel
About 25 miles.   Easy flat terrain . About 4 -5 hours, with stops.

4 stalwarts today, braved Siberian winds, and left Devoran 11 am
A wonderful ride thru varied off-road tracks, passing thru old tramway and railway routes once used to transport ore to and from the many tin and copper mines to ports such as Devoran and Portreath.

I have to wax lyrical about the hosts of golden daffys, snowdrops, camellias  and rhodos in gardens we whizzed past, the Herons on mining lakes, Dippers, and four thousand and twenty Blackbirds to make ten pies!    The sun shone, we got hot and hungry at Portreath and all needs catered for at BRIDGE pub nearby.

Alison from Lostwithiel U3A
Back to our 2 cars, 4 ish, pm, all feeling high and exultant at being in good company, good biking workout, good reason to feel spry and fit, albeit knackered, considering our average age of 60 plus years!

An afternoon trip planned for next week...2-3 hours, poss HELMAN TOR LABYRINTH, hopefully with sighting of Minotaur so bring camera !
