Photography Group Exhibition at Taprell House

U3A Lostwithiel

Photography Group Exhibition at Taprell House

The official opening on the 30th November was very successful and well attended.  We were delighted to welcome our Mayor, Gill Parsons, who opened the event.

Peter described how the group had evolved,  gaining expertise and confidence  since starting 11 months ago. We were delighted that several orders for prints were taken.

The Group would like to say thank you to Rose O’Keefe for her assistance, and to Fran’s Pantry for their contribution to the refreshments.

The exhibition is on until early January.

Update 27/11/13

Dear Photography Group members,

Apart from a little bit of fine-tuning, our photographic exhibition is now up and running in Lostwithiel Library. I would like to thank you all for your contributions and assistance in setting up the exhibition.

This has resulted in a superb display of excellent photographs and I am sure you will be proud of what you have achieved - I certainly am.

I look forward to seeing you in the library on Thursday afternoon, when we can review the exhibition and prepare for the preview morning on Saturday (30th November).

Best wishes

Peter

Update 4/10/13

Message from Peter Bland,

Dear Photography Group members

Here is a reminder of the dates for the forthcoming Photography Group Exhibition at Lostwithiel Library:

  •     Thursday 31st October - meeting in the library at 2pm (please bring your photographs for framing)
  •     Friday 15th November - drop-in meeting at The Platform between 10am-4om (please bring your photographs for framing)
  •     Tuesday 19th November - meeting in the library at 10am (please bring your photographs for framing)
  •     Thursday 21st November - usual meeting in the library at 2pm
  •     Friday 22nd November - meeting in the library to set up the exhibition

(Please note there will NOT be the usual Field Trip and follow-up meeting during October.)

As you will appreciate, I have been providing paper, mounting card and frames for the exhibition. Several people have asked about cost. In the first instance, I must say I enjoy seeing people rewarded with their own photographs and as such on a day to day basis would not request payment, and indeed I would not insist on payment for anything I have done.

However, should you wish to contribute, I would suggest the following:

A framed picture with paper and mounting board costs me approximately £15.00 each. For those of you who would like to keep your framed photographs, I would suggest this is a reasonable price.

All the photographs will be displayed at the exhibition and if any are sold then there will be two costs - the first being to pay the library's commission (which is 30%) and the second is the cost of the framing. The remaining amount will be your profit. I do not expect vast sales but I feel it is good to have one's work displayed in this way.

Therefore, in summary, I would suggest that if you wish to keep your framed photographs, or if they sell at the exhibition, you can refund me £15.00. On the other hand, if you just wish to keep the pictures and return the frames to me, a small donation (of say, £3) would be appreciated but not insisted upon.

I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting on 31st October or at the Monday workshops (see attached newsletter for available dates).

Best wishes
Peter

NEWSLETTER

August 2013

Our last field trip was to Wheal Martin China Clay Museum and there was a good turnout of members.

The weather was once again kind to us and a good many photographs were taken.

At our last meeting in the library, we did some table-top photography and portraiture using natural light.

Our next meeting on Friday 20th September will be a guided tour of Lostwithiel with John Pegg. This will give the opportunity to learn more about our town and take photographs as we go, so make sure you bring your camera.

For this event, we meet at the Community Centre at 10:30am.

For the next meeting in the library on Thursday 26th September, we will start to look at preparing for the exhibition of photographs to be held in the library before Christmas. If you have photographs that have been printed at the evening workshops and are ready for framing, please bring them along.

The Monday evening workshops are going well and members seem to gain some benefit from them. If you are interested in attending a workshop then please contact me on 01208 871100. There are slots available in October and November but September is now fully booked except for the 30th.

In the meantime, I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our next field trip and in the library the following week.

Update 13/08/13

Dear Photography group members.

It has been bought to my attention that roadworks and Friday holiday traffic on the A30 may make our trip to Jamaica Inn somewhat difficult & frustrating.

As such, I would propose a change of venue for this coming Friday.

Meet at 10am at Wheal Martyn China Clay Museum, Carthew, St. Austell. PL26 8XG. Telephone 01726 850362

There should be plenty to photograph at the museum and there is the surrounding country park as well.

I am sorry for this late change but felt it worthwhile and we can visit Bodmin Moor later in the year when it is a little quieter.

Another Important Notice.

I mentioned a Photography Group exhibition in the library some time ago and have provisionally booked this for the 3 weeks before Christmas.

I have a large number of frames, cutting and mounting material and will be pleased to print your photos as well. A few members who attend my Monday evening workshops have already done so.

I would be grateful if you would email or telephone me to confirm if you are interested in joining in. I would suggest we need 20+ pictures to make a good display and members can put in more than one picture if they wish.

The photos will be for sale (ideal Christmas presents) and if any are sold, just pay me for the materials and library commission - you can enjoy the vast profits.

So please contact me over the next week or two as we will need to start preparing and if there is not sufficient interest then I would like to let the library know by the end of the month so that another group can have the slot.

Look forward to seeing you on Friday at Wheal Martyn and in the library on Thursday 22nd for some table top photography - so bring your camera and a tripod if you have one.

Best wishes.

Peter

July 2013

There was a goodturnout for our walk around Luxulyan Valley on 19th July. We had anenjoyable stroll and took plenty of photographs. Thanks to Reuben for showingus the way and also for providing such good weather.

At our Thursdaymeeting on 25th July, we discussed future events and the way forwardfor the group.

One area ofinterest was to take photographs around Lostwithiel. It was suggested that itmay be worth contacting John Pegg for a guided tour of the town. Thanks toReuben this was organised for our September field trip.

For the Augustfield trip, it was suggested a walk on Bodmin Moor for landscape photography. It was therefore agreed that we will meet at Jamaica Inn at the usual time.

For the Librarymeeting in August, I suggested everyone bringing our cameras and some props, todo some tabletop/portrait photography.

I still havevacancies for the Monday evening workshops so please contact me (01208 871100)if you are interested.

Update 08/07/13

NEWSLETTER

Four of us turnedup for the last field trip to Lanhydrock (21st June). Regretfully Iwas unable to stay for the full day, but have seen several good photographstaken from that time.

At our lastmeeting in Lostwithiel Library on 27th June, I was unable to attendbut Reuben very kindly deputised for me. In reporting back, he suggested somemodifications to the routine on the Thursday meeting.

Basically, thiswas to view the pictures from the field trip in the first half and then agreewhere to go on the next field trip in the second half. In essence, this isbasically what I have tried to do but will endeavour to structure it moreclearly in future.

Carrying from themeeting, I have also indicated a schedule of possible photographic disciplinesthat can be associated with field trips, and at the same time have suggestedpossible venues. Attached is a table of suggestions, and if anyone else hasideas these would be greatly appreciated. However, if we work through the tablethis should keep us going for quite a few months to come.

The next fieldtrip will be in the Luxulyan Valley, meeting at Ponts Mill car park at 10am onFriday 19th July. A field trip itinerary is attached.

I am still runningMonday evening workshops for those interested, and am pleased to say my wifeCaroline (who is an exceptionally good photographer) is assisting me, so thosewho come along effectively get one-to-one assistance. I intend running theseworkshops every Monday when I can, as long as the interest remains. If youwould like to join in, just give me a call (01208 871100) or email me (lanliverycottage@aol.com).

In the meantime, Ilook forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our next field trip and inthe library the following week.

Update 06/07/13

The photography group meetings are always every fourth Thursday at 2pm in the Library and a days field trip on the third Friday each month.

Next library meeting 27th June.  Next field trip 19th July.

Update 29/5/13

Our last field trip was to Golitha Falls. The weather was kind to us and a good number of photographs were taken.

At our last meeting in the library Thursday (23rd May 2013) , I gave the second part of my talk of the brief history of photography. We then looked at members’ photographs taken from recent fieldtrips and discussed them.

.

I am currently running some Monday evening workshops on basic digital imaging. This is not intended to conflict with the Digital Imaging Group elsewhere in Lostwithiel U3A, and is purely to give members the chance to carry out some very basic manipulation and print their photographs. I would recommend that anyone wanting to take digital imaging further investigate the Digital Imaging Group.

I will be running these workshops on Monday evenings from 5pm-8pm at my home for the next few weeks. A few members have already signed up. There will be no more than three people per meeting, so that each can have a computer and maximum attention. If you are interested in attending, please call me (01208 81100) so I can put your name down.

One final point, Ronnie Puttock of the U3A Birding Group had contacted me and, as announced at the library meeting, there are still spaces available for a fieldtrip with the Birding Group to see the choughs guided by one of the wardens. This seems to be a very good opportunity of seeing the choughs and anyone who is interested should contact Ronnie Puttock, whose details are on the U3A Birdwatching section of the website.

Update 02/5/13

There was a verygood turnout for this Thursday’s meeting.(25th April 2013)

We discussed thenext field trip and it was agreed that as I was unable to attend the previousfield trip and only three members went, we would repeat the trip starting offin the Golitha Falls car park and then moving on to the Hurlers / Cheesewringat Minions (see attached Field Trip Itinerary).

I then went on togive the first part of a three-part talk on the history of photography andafter that we went through members’ photographs.

I also suggested Iwould be happy to run some small group workshops on very basic photo editing, the idea being to take a few simple steps to improve your photographs and thengo on to print them. This is not intended to replace the Digital Imaging Groupelsewhere in Lostwithiel U3A, and I would recommend those members wishing toadvance their skill to consider that group as well.

I would proposelimiting the numbers to three or four each time, as my office is fairly small, but I do have three desktop computers and a laptop that can be used.

A number ofmembers left their names expressing interest in the workshop and I will contactthem individually. If you did not put your name down and are interested thenplease contact me.

Diary Dates:

Report from Meeting held   Thursday 28th March 2013

At this meeting in the library, we discussed some ideas on composition, together with a little more about camera controls. Hopefully these can be put to good use at our next field trip.

We also discussed the exhibition which will take place from the last week in November through until Christmas. Peter offered the use of frames, of which there should be at least one for each member wishing to display a photograph.

Several ideas were discussed for the field trip and it was agreed that for our trip on Friday 19th April we would go to Golitha Falls for the morning and then on to the Hurlers and Cheesewring in the afternoon. It is particularly worth bringing a tripod if you have one as Golitha will be quite dark and it will be a good opportunity to photograph the moving water.

Golitha can be extremely muddy and slippery. Please wear walking boots, or other suitable footwear, and bring warm, waterproof clothing. Please also bring a packed lunch.

Update 18/3/13

Report of visit to Cotehele Quay & Gardens   Friday 15th March 2013

The weather forecast was not good and I guessed that would have put off many people, but five hardy souls turned up to a morning of photography and a good lunch in the restaurant.

We started off on the quay and walked through the woods to the mill, then made our way up to the gardens to photograph the dovecote and pond. After lunch, the weather deteriorated and after a few more photographs we went home, but all present seemed to enjoy the day.

On our next meeting at Lostwithiel Library on Thursday 28th March, we will have a brief discussion about composition and perhaps a little more about getting to know your camera.

We also need to discuss the next field trip in April and the China Clay Museum has been suggested as a possibility, together with a trip on the train to Falmouth to have a look at the Maritime Museum, but any other ideas will be welcome.

Therefore, our next meetings are on Thursday 28th March in Lostwithiel Library at 2pm, plus a field trip on Friday 19th April (venue to be agreed).

Report of Meeting Thursday 28th February 2013

There was a very good turnout of Photography Group members and Peter started by giving a very brief explanation of exposure, F-Stops, etc. and their effects on depth of field and movement effects.

I felt I did not explain this particularly well but in principle, the larger the aperture (i.e. the smaller the number of the F-Stop – somewhat confusing) the smaller the depth of field. The smaller the aperture (greater F-Stop number) the greater the depth of field.

I did say I would try and expand on this, but it is probably better done by others and here is a link to a site that covers this subject: www.uscoles.com/fstop.htm

We then went on to look at member’s photographs from our recent trip to Lost Gardens of Heligan and carried out some very basic manipulation in Adobe Photoshop.

As for the next field trip;  this would take place at National Trust property Cotehele House. The house itself will be closed on the day but the gardens and mill are open to visitors, as is the restaurant and shop. Again, car sharing where possible and Peter can take three or four.

Peter has also provisionally booked the Library exhibition space just before Christmas, for a U3A Photography Group members exhibition. For this Peter can supply frames and help with printing if need be.

The next meeting in the Library will be about how to use your camera controls.
Therefore, the next meeting dates will be the field trip on Friday 15th March (please see Itinerary details below.). The follow-up meeting will be on Thursday 28th March at 2pm in Lostwithiel Library.
