Update 30th MAY 2016

Dear Photography Group members,

Lindsay informed me you had a good afternoon last Thursday, with eight photographers and one sherpa attending the field trip to Bedruthan.

She reported the thrift was just beginning to be over its best but still vibrant in patches. Skylarks and stonechats provided a lovely background sound. I am informed the cream tea was very good. It was decided to postpone any sunset photography until later in the year, once the longest day is far behind us, so we won't have to be out so late.

Don't forget our next third-Thursday meeting on Thursday 16th June will be at Lanlivery Cottage, where there will be some practical food photography (and possibly eating afterwards). This will be led by professional photographer Claire Wilson, who is also taking us on a field trip later in the year.

Our next field trip is scheduled for Thursday 23rd June, to photograph the wild flowers at West Pentire. This will be led by Jenny Edrich, but please be aware there might be a slight adjustment of the date to take advantage of the best time for the flowers. Jenny feels this may move on a few days but she is in touch with National Trust to determine the best time. I therefore suggest you pencil in 23rd June for the moment, but watch this space in case the date changes.

On Thursday 30th June I am leading a field trip with Newquay U3A Photography Group. We are going to Geevor Tin Mine, and if any of you would like to come along you would be more than welcome. A field trip sheet is attached.

I have arranged a third day with Ross Hoddinott and this is already fully booked, but if any more of you would like to be considered for future days out with Ross, please let me know and I will put you on a shortlist.

Please also remember our field trip to Lethytep Gardens on Friday 10th June. If you would like to go then please contact Annie Singer of the U3A Garden Visits Group to let her know: annie.singer AT talk21 DOT com  or CLICK HERE . It is proposed to set off from Lostwithiel Community Centre car park at 1:30pm (if anyone would like to car share, Caroline and I have a couple of spaces), with a view to getting to Lethytep by 2pm. A donation of £5 is suggested as there will be a cream tea provided for us after the guided tour. Here is the Lethytep website link: http://www.cornwallwildlifehaven.co.uk/index.php.

I shall look forward to seeing you all at Lanlivery Cottage on 16th June. Whilst I suspect most of you will know how to get here, if any of you don't then please contact me and I can give you directions.

Best wishes

Peter

Update 20th MAY 2016

Dear Photography Group members,

Good day at the Platform Office yesterday and thank you to Caroline for leading this one in my absence.

I gather there were some very good photographs, and also thank you to Jane for outlining the Royal Photographic Society Advisory Day that some of us attended.

As to forthcoming events, see the updated calendar and you will note there are a couple of bonus field trips coming up, one to Geevor Tin Mine (in conjunction with Newquay U3A Photography Group) and one to Marsh Villa Gardens led by Reuben.

Our next field trip on Thursday 26th May is a change from the previously advertised one, and it will be a trip along the North Cornwall Coast - Bedruthan Steps, Trevose Lighthouse, etc. This will be led by Lindsay, and follows on from the fantastic day we had with Ross Hoddinott and retraces some of the steps we took. Please note this is a later start than usual, 3pm, to take advantage of the evening light. A field trip sheet is available.

Our next third-Thursday meeting on Thursday 16th June will not be at the Platform Office but at Lanlivery Cottage, for an afternoon of food photography, led by professional photographer Claire Wilson.  See more examples of Claire's food photography on her website.  At the same time I will open up the office for some computer work if anybody wants to take advantage of that, and there could also be some photography around the garden.

I am sure most of you will have been to Lanlivery Cottage before, but if you haven't let me know and I will send you directions.

If any of you have any particular thoughts for forthcoming third-Thursday meetings then please let me know. Also, if there is anything you would like to do on our field trips, although these are now more or less full for the year, but there is always the possibility of a bonus trip if you wish.

As regards the trip to Westonbirt Arboretum, set for 24th November, I am looking into the possibility of hiring a coach so we can invite along the Lostwithiel U3A Garden Visits Group, and indeed anyone else in U3A who is interested. I will firm up on the date nearer the time, as there may be some variation depending upon the progression of the autumn colours and best time to go.

Whilst I have not made any arrangements yet, there has been further interest in a day with Ross Hoddinott. I know that some of you (including Caroline and myself, who have already spent a day with Ross) would like to go again, so I am putting together a shortlist. Please let me know if you are interested.

Our June field trip, on Thursday 23rd June, will be to look at the wild flowers at West Pentire, Crantock. This is to be organised by Jenny Edrich, although she has indicated she will keep an eye on the best time to go, which might be a little either side of the arranged date. Therefore, I will keep you posted on this.

On Wednesday 27th July the UK's largest ever puppet, the colossal 'Man Engine', will be passing through Lostwithiel. Here is a link for more information: http://cornish-mining.org.uk/news/birth-colossal-‘man-engine’-heralds-cornish-mining’s-‘tinth’-year

There are also two local photo competitions coming up and details, as scanned images from this week's Cornish Guardian, may be viewed HERE and HERE

In the meantime, keep taking plenty of photographs, and look forward to seeing you next time.

Best wishes

Peter

Update 13th MAY 2016
Dear Photography Group members

Those of us who went on the first Ross Hoddinott day yesterday had a great time. The weather wasn't perfect but the company was very good and the photography tuition from Ross was superb, so I slightly envy those of you who are going on the next trip in June.

Our next third-Thursday meeting will be at the Platform Office at Lostwithiel Train Station, rather than the Royal Oak, so please bring along your photographs.

Our next field trip, on Thursday 26th May, will be to Bedruthan Steps and Trevose lighthouse. Those of us who attended the Ross Hoddinott workshop on 12th May saw the fabulous carpets of wild flowers just coming into bloom on the cliffs and we now know of some particularly good spots for taking stunning landscapes. The locations will be particularly excellent for some late evening photography too for anyone who wants to stay late. There is an excellent pub with great food nearby for refuelling. More details available HERE

NOTE: This trip on 26th May replaces the previously advertised visit to Port Eliot Estate and St Germans Priory, which will now take place later in the year.

Hopefully the weather will be better than the day Jennie took this photo!

For June, we have our food photography day on Thursday 16th June (moved from this month). Our field trip on Thursday 23rd June will be to photograph the poppies and landscape at West Pentire, led by Jenny Edrich.

I thought some of you might like to know that Claire WIlson (who will be doing our food photography day next month) is running a beginners workshop/day course for photography.  The workshop will from 9:30am to 4:30pm on Sunday 12th June at Driftwood Spars in St Agnes (https://www.driftwoodspars.co.uk). The day will include an introduction to photography techniques and camera settings etc. and outdoor opportunities (weather permitting) to take photographs. There will be refreshments throughout the day including a Cornish afternoon tea. Here is a link to Claire's website: http://lle-photography.co.uk. Further details on the workshop can be found on the 'blog' section, as well as information about Claire's experience in photography.  If you are interested, please  CLICK HERE TO EMAIL CLAIRE for details  or sign up via her website.

I am leading a trip with Newquay U3A Photography Group on Thursday 30th June to Geevor Tin Mine.  Details here

Jennie B, who also leads the Newquay U3A Photography Group, is looking into a trip to Westcountry Wildlife Photography Centre (http://www.wcwpc.co.uk) and you may remember I mentioned this some time ago. I will let you have a date (it will probably take place in October) and would be pleased to hear if you are interested in this trip.

Look forward to seeing you all in June.

Best wishes,

Peter

Update 4th MAY  2016  -  CHANGE OF PLANS

Dear Photography Group members

Regretfully I have had to change the food photography day from Thursday 19th May to Thursday 16th June, as we will be away this month.

In view of this, the next third Thursday meeting will not be at Lanlivery Cottage but will be at the Platform Office at Lostwithiel train station (NOT the Royal Oak).

Therefore, our Thursday 19th May meeting at the Platform Office will be a general meeting, so please bring along your photographs.

The next field trip will be on Thursday 26th May to Port Eliot estate and St Germans Priory Church, to be led by Lindsay and Marion (details to follow).

Next month's Thursday meeting, on Thursday 16th June, will be at Lanlivery Cottage for the food photography session.

Just to let you know I have also bought a new projector, which I will bring along to photography group meetings in future. This leaves my old projector redundant, so if anyone would like it at a bargain price then please contact me.

Best wishes

Peter

Update 29 April 2016

Dear Photography Group members,

I am sorry I was not able to attend the St Ives field trip but it was well led by Jennie M and her report of the day is below.

"Six ‘intrepid’ photographers set out for St Ives from Lostwithiel train station in sunshine! Marion, Jane & Peter, Bob, David and myself. We all had railcards so no problem with tickets.

David had a plan for his day and left us on arrival at St Ives, in the hope of meeting up for the return train journey!

A coffee and comfort stop was the first port of call for the remaining five at a Hotel with rooftop terrace for our initial photos of the bay.  After our refreshment we made our way along the sea front and through the streets up to the Museum and onwards to the island.

At this point there was a small hiatus in the proceedings for two of our party, who did a quick U-turn to the hotel to pick up a backpack, which in the excitement of the day, had been left on the rooftop terrace!! The three remaining members of the group made their way up to the island for more views of the Bay and beach huts.  Re-united with our errant two, we went to the National Coastwatch station, where we were welcomed inside to take pictures and have a chat to the two watch keepers on duty.

After taking photographs at the little Chapel of St Nicholas on the point, we made our way back into town to have something to eat and then it was time to get back to the station. David had had a successful day and met us back at the train station.

We had one short rain shower shortly after our arrival at St Ives but the remainder of the time was fine and sunny but windy out at the island.

I think everyone enjoyed the day, all the trains ran to time and all agreed the weather had certainly made it a good day for photography with the light being just right. "

Jane has also contacted me regarding garden trips, and she has said the following:

  • Ethy House Garden - Saturday 7th May 2pm to 5pm - bluebells and woodland to rear of house, also excellent cake!
  • Boconnoc Gardens - Sunday 1st, 8th and 15th May 2pm to 5pm - mature woodland and lake plus spring flowering shrubs
  • Also, for those of us who cannot attend the joint meeting at Lethytep on 10th June, I see from their web site the garden is open on other days during June, which may be of interest.

Our next meeting will be here at Lanlivery Cottage, on Thursday 19th May, where we will doing some food photography led by Claire Wilson. I will send a note a few days before to give you more information.

Best wishes

Peter

Update 26 April 2016

Dear Photography Group members

I am sorry I was not able to attend last Thursday's meeting at The Royal Oak but gather all went well. Thank you to Malcolm for giving a talk on Lightroom, which I hear was well received.

Don't forget this coming Thursday 28th April will be the field trip to St Ives, arranged by Jennie Mursell. Regretfully I am unable to attend this event as well but I am sure you will all have a good day. The weather forecast looks promising so I hope you are able to take plenty of photographs.

Looking ahead to the next third Thursday meeting on Thursday 19th May, this will be at Lanlivery Cottage and will be run by professional photographer, Claire Wilson. I will send you more details nearer the time but this will involve general food photography. We will set up some stations in our living room so you can photograph the food that had been prepared, and perhaps some work using macro techniques. You will then afterwards have the pleasure of eating your subject.

Claire will also been running our August field trip, on Thursday 26th August. She has suggested a possibility of an outing to Kennall Vale near Ponsanooth, which is a Cornwall Wildlife Trust nature reserve. Here are some website links:

Again, we will give more detail nearer the time, but Claire feels this a good venue that provides opportunities for nature photography, landscape, local history (derelict buildings, old ironworks, etc.) so lots to photograph.

I hope you all have a good time in St Ives at I look forward to seeing you at our next third Thursday meeting.

Best wishes

Peter

Update 15 April 2016

Dear Photography Group members

Thank you to those of you who supported the Photography Group at the recent Bird Group meeting at Walmsley Sanctuary and at the Newquay U3A Photography Group meeting at Porth Reservoir.

I feel it is good to get involved with other groups as well and don't forget a meeting at Lethytep with the Garden Visits Group on Friday 10th June.   CLICK HERE  to contact  the Group Organiser Annie Singer  should you wish to be included in the day out. Also, a link to the website of Lethytep:http://www.cornwallwildlifehaven.co.uk.

Our next field trip is on Thursday 28th April, when Jennie M has arranged a trip on the train down to St Ives. Again, this has been mentioned  earlier  but here is a reminder

Our next meeting at The Royal Oak next Thursday 21st April will be another talk by Malcolm on Lightroom, and please bring along your photographs for viewing as well.

Our May meeting, on Thursday 19th May, will not be at The Royal Oak but will be at Lanlivery Cottage, where professional photographer Claire WIlson will be giving us some practical work on food photography.  Here is a link to Claire's website: http://lle-photography.co.uk

Look forward to seeing you all next time.

Update 1 April 2016

Dear Photography Group members,

Clive Jones and Lindsay have informed me that the Nik software suite (which I seem to remember cost around £100) is now free to download. I gather if you purchased the Nik Collection 2016 you will receive a full refund. See    https://www.google.com/nikcollection/

The Google Nik Collection is very useful, in particular the Silver Efex Pro for converting black and white photographs. As the collection is now free, I would urge you to try it, so thanks to Clive and Lindsay for pointing this out.

As regards our next field trip on Thursday 28th April, Jennie M has organised this and a field trip sheet is available here. The train departs Lostwithiel at 10:07am so it is worth getting there early if you live on the 'wrong' side of the track, bearing in mind the level crossing gates sometimes come down much earlier if there are two trains coming through. The return train will leave St Ives at 3:30pm, which will give us about four hours there. Jennie has put all the details on the field trip note, and I look forward to seeing you then.

Don't forget our third Thursday meeting will again be at the Royal Oak, and this time Malcolm will be giving another of his Lightroom talks. Please bring along your photographs for viewing as well.

Best wishes

Peter

Update  23rd March 2016

Dear Photography Group members,

Having looked at the weather forecast for tomorrow, there is heavy rain predicted for the morning. Having spoken to Lindsay, we feel it would be better to reschedule the trip.

Therefore, the trip to Broadagogue Cove tomorrow is not going ahead.

We looked at running the trip next week but it looks like rain is forecast throughout the week, so this might not be practical.

This Friday (25th March) looks good weather-wise, and Lindsay has offered to lead the trip that day. Would you please contact Lindsay if you wish to go  Click to email Lindsay

Update  21st March 2016

Dear Photography Group members,

We had a great meeting at our new third Thursday venue at the Royal Oak Inn. Thanks again to all those of you who brought photographs along, it is always good to see everybody's work.

We then set up some tabletop photography, and if you took photographs then please bring them along for the next meeting, it will be interesting to see the results.

Thank to you to everyone who has sent me photographs from the St Winnow Church trip, and I will put together a selection for Frances Stephens as a thank you. If anyone else has photographs they would like to send over the next few days then I would be pleased to include them.

Lindsay has started a Flickr webpage for the group and handed out an instruction sheet so you can add photographs yourself.

Our next field trip this coming Thursday 24th March is to Broadagogue Cove, arranged by Lindsay. A field trip sheet for this is attached.

We now have two days booked with Ross Hoddinott, the first being Thursday 12th May and another group of six for Tuesday 21st June. Ross has confirmed both these dates and I will write to individual members with the details. If you are interested in going on a day out with Ross but have not booked, I would be pleased to put your name on a reserve list.

We had a talk by James Kitto at the Church Rooms last week, which was very interesting. I subsequently contacted him and he is keen and willing to give us a day out down West, looking at some of the ancient monuments and doing some landscape photography. I gained the impression many of you were keen to follow this up so I have asked James to give us some ideas for venues and dates. The timing may have to be in school holidays as James is a teacher, although another option could be a weekend trip.

There is a Lostwithiel U3A Birding Group trip to Walmsley Marsh on Wednesday 30th March. We have been there as a photography group and if you are interested, please have a look at the Birding Group webpage on the Lostwithiel Area U3A website and contact Alan or Marion May.

Looking forward to seeing you all at Daymer Bay car park at 10am this coming Thursday

Best wishes

Peter

Update  2nd March 2016

Dear Photography Group members

Attached is an updated field trip calendar, to which I have added a day out with Claire WIlson on Thursday 26th August (venue to be arranged). Claire is a freelance photographer and she has also offered to give us a talk on food photography.

I have also started a schedule for our third Thursday meetings and this is also attached.

I am trying to plan ahead with a topic for each meeting but please bring along your photographs for discussion as usual.

I have shown Claire's food photography talk to be on Thursday 19th May, and whilst our normal meeting will now be at the Royal Oak, I would propose this one at Lanlivery Cottage where there are cooking facilities.

If anyone has any ideas they would like to suggest for future third Thursday meetings, please let me know.

Looking forward to seeing you all at our next meeting on Thursday 17th March at the Royal Oak at 2pm.

Best wishes

Peter

Update  1st March 2016

Dear Photography Group members,

We had a very good trip to St Winnow and as a thank you to the churchwarden would you please email me your best photos from the day, so I can pass them on to Frances Stephens.

Here is an updated field trip calendar.

On Thursday 24th March, we will be going to Broadagogue Cove, arranged by Lindsay.  More details of the trip available via this link.

On Thursday 28th April, we will have a day out at St Ives, organised by Jennie M.

On Thursday 26th May, this was to be Polzeath/Daymer Bay arranged by Lindsay, but this has now moved to 24th March. I would therefore propose a trip to Port Eliot and St Germans Priory Church.

On Thursday 23rd June is to photograph poppies blooming at West Pentire, organised by Jenny E.

On Thursday 28th July, we will have a day at The Garden House in Buckland, as well as visiting Dartmoor. Caroline will make the arrangements for this trip.

On Monday 8th August will be a trip to Windmill Farm with David Chapman. More on this nearer the time. I would view this as an extra field trip so have kept our usual date of Thursday 26th August (venue to be agreed).

I have nothing for September and October field trips yet, so any ideas would be appreciated.

On Thursday 24th November we are going to Westonbirt Arboretum in Gloucestershire, but it may be this would be better in October, depending on how the autumn colours are progressing.

As regards the Ross Hoddinott day out, this is now fully booked for Thursday 12th May. I do have people asking another day so once again, I would ask you to email me if you are interested in a Ross Hoddinott trip so I can carry on organising it.

Also, don't forget that our next "Platform" meeting on Thursday 17th March will be at 2pm at The Royal Oak public house.

There will be an exhibition at Cornish Studies Library, Redruth, from 5th March until 2nd April. Called Cornwall Captured! Life Through a Lens 1841-2015, the exhibition looks at over 150 years of photography and photographers in Cornwall. The opening day, on March 5th, has special displays and family events between 10am and 2pm.

Best wishes

Peter

Update  25th FEBRUARY 2016

Dear Photography Group members

We had a great morning at St Winnow and a big thank you to Marion and Frances Stephens for arranging this. The weather was very good and there was a lot of indoor and outdoor photography.

It good to see so many of you turn up for what turned out to be a very enjoyable morning.

St Winnow Churchyard

St Winnow Churchyard by Lindsay
(Click for larger view)

As regards forthcoming events, Lindsay has suggested going to Broadagogue Cove, and I have included her email with more details below.

Therefore, our next field trip will be on Thursday 24th March at Broadagogue Cove (situated between Daymer Bay and Polzeath). The itinerary  available here

For the life of the photography group so far we have met at the Platform Office, but the last meeting was somewhat cramped and with the growing group, Marion and Lindsay have investigated other possible venues. A good choice seems to be The Royal Oak, which has a large room and could be free of charge on the basis we buy teas and coffees there. We will need to review this as we would not want to see the landlord lose out, but apparently the venue is larger and would suit our purposes well.

Therefore, our next meeting will be held at The Royal Oak (Duke Street, Lostwithiel) at 2pm on Thursday 17th March. We could do table-top photography so bring your cameras and tripods.

There has been a lot of interest in the Ross Hoddinott day out, and subject making a final confirmation with him, I would suggest the first day to be on Thursday 12th May, and the second day on Thursday 23rd June (or Friday 24th June, if people do not want it to clash with our usual field trip).

As regards venues, Ross has suggested West Cornwall (e.g. Godrevy Island, St Michaels Mount, Lands End coastline, Botallack, Porth Nanven), or Dartmoor. Another option could be North Cornwall (e.g. Bedruthan, Trevose Lighthouse, Trebarwith Strand). He has mentioned the thrift may be flowering along the clifftops at this time of year.

There are many options and I will talk to Ross more on this, but with the interest so far it may be we could go into a third day out, so as mentioned this morning I would be grateful if you would email me confirming your request for place on the trip (unless you have already done so).

I look forward to seeing you all next month at The Royal Oak or at the upcoming workshops. In the meantime, keep taking photographs

Best wishes

Peter

Email from Lindsay:

Broadagogue Cove is situated between Daymer Bay and Polzeath.  http://cornwallbeaches.org.uk/North-Coast-North-Cornwall/Broadagogue-Cove-Greenaway-Beach.pdf

There are masses of rock pools, mussels and lovely strata in the rocks. Opportunities for landscape and macro photography.

There is no toilet but a few caves! No refreshments there but a big beach so bring a picnic and a deckchair/ blanket!

The tide is not at its best on the 17th March as high tide is at midday. That would restrict us considerably. If we stick to the 24th March low tide is at midday so would be perfect for a 10am start there. I have checked the school holidays and most schools don't break up until that day so we shouldn't be over run with buckets and spades.

Photos taken at Broadagogue Cove.

Recommend parking at Daymer Bay (£3 all day). Approx half a mile walk to path down to beach. Level walk to path, then path has steps which are a little steep but very solid with handrail. I can send a map nearer the time.

Update  20th FEBRUARY 2016

Dear Photography Group members

First of all, a big thank you to Marion for making blackout curtains for the Platform. They did a fantastic job and made projection so much better.

We had a very good meeting at the Platform yesterday, and I was delighted to welcome new members following on from the recent U3A Open Day. It was great to see so many new faces and leads me to think we may need to look for a larger venue in due course if things continue this way.

Once again, thank you for bringing all your photographs, particularly from the recent Bristol trip. Also thank you to Derek, who brought along some church photographs as a prelude to our forthcoming St Winnow trip.

Bristol Bridge
Bristol Bridge by Lindsay
(Click on image for larger view)

We talked about future future field trips, and for Thursday March 24th March I would propose a trip to Falmouth, possibly by train, or to Dartmoor Zoo, as suggested by Malcolm.

Other field trips are gradually filling up through the year, but as always if anyone has a particular thought as to where they would like to go then let me know and we will try and fit it in. Another possibility could be Tintagel Castle but at present it is only open on weekends, so this could be a trip for July or September.

As regards David Chapman's trip, I have initially booked this for Thursday 4th August. However, bearing in mind some of you are away or cannot attend for other reasons, David has said he can change this to the following Monday 8th August.

I also mentioned Ross Hoddinott, another professional photographer. Here is his website: http://www.rosshoddinott.co.uk
Caroline had a day out with Ross last year, and I have to say it was very good. Ross is a really nice person and an excellent teacher.

Ross prefers to deal with very small groups, because it allows him to devote individual time for one-to-one tuition, but says he would be happy to take a maximum of six of us for a day out. The cost for this would work out at about £65 each, which I personally think is good value.

He has suggested a range of venues, including north Cornwall or Devon coast, Dorset, or Dartmoor (Caroline and I did Dartmoor with him which was excellent). As regards the date for this trip I suggested May or June, and this would be a 'bonus' field trip in addition to our usual monthly Thursday trips.

At our meeting I asked for a show of hands of those interested, and there were enough to possibly cover two days with Ross. I will now contact him and ask for available dates and recommendations for venues.

Those of you who are interested in a day out with Ross, please email or phone me. As you will appreciate, the spaces will be limited and I would deal with it on a first-come-first-serve basis to be fair. As mentioned above, there could be the chance of a second trip if the first one is over-subscribed.

I also mentioned the Westcountry Wildlife Photography Centre in Lifton. Here is the website: http://www.wcwpc.co.uk/index.htm
This would be £48 per person for a day out, and gives the opportunity for close-up pictures of wildlife. However, the group size they take is limited to between 8-12, so again let me know if you are interested and I will keep a list with a view to possibly booking it.

I look forward to seeing you all at St Winnow next Thursday. I will bring some lights and you bring your cameras and tripods.

Best wishes,

Peter

Update  17th FEBRUARY 2016

Dear Photography Group members

It was good to see so many of you at the U3A Open Day last Saturday. We had a particularly good turnout and thank you to all who brought pictures along. They made a grand display and created lots of interest.

I have a number of members interested in joining so have added them to the mailing list, so hopefully we will see you at forthcoming events.

As regards the forthcoming programme, it is our usual meeting at the Platform Office this coming Thursday 18th February. I have nothing specific planned at the moment so please bring along your photographs from field trips or anything of interest, and we can progress on future events.

For the March Platform Office meeting, on Thursday 17th March, I would propose trying some tabletop photography so bring along your tripods and cameras, along with something you might like to photograph. I will organise some lighting and see how we get on.

For the April Platform Office meeting, on Thursday 21st April, Malcolm has kindly offered to give us another of his talks on Lightroom. I know many of you are moving towards using Lightroom, as indeed am I having seen what it can do, so this should be a useful meeting.

As I mentioned previously, I will try and get Claire Wilson along to give us some time. As I explained in my earlier email, she is a freelance photographer but is keen to start doing workshops, so is happy to use us as guinea pigs to start with.

Subject to availability, the May meeting, on Thursday 19th May, could be food photography. It would be on a budget, i.e. using simple, readily-available lighting, and could be held at Lanlivery Cottage as there is more room and cooking facilities. I will confirm details later once I have agreed something with Claire.

Claire has also said she would be happy to give us a day's outing, perhaps doing street photography or something similar. I have penciled this in for our July meeting for now.

A while back we had Gabs to model for us for a portrait session, and this is something we could do again later in the year, as I got the impression it was an enjoyable afternoon.

The next field trip will be at St Winnow Church on Thursday 25th February, kindly arranged by Marion. The churchwarden has offered us full facilities in terms of access, lighting, etc.

St Winnow Church by Carolyn

I have not arranged anything yet for the March field trip, on Thursday 24th March, but if anyone has any ideas then please let me know. The April field trip, organised by Jennie Mursell, will be to St Ives, probably on the train like we did last year. The May field trip will be Polzeath and Daymer Bay, organised by Lindsay, and the June field trip will be to photograph the wild poppies at West Pentire, organised by Jenny Edrich. As mentioned above, the July trip will be a day out with Claire Wilson, subject to confirmation.

Don't forget that in August (probably Thursday 4th August) we will have a day out with David Chapman at Windmill Farm on The Lizard. More of that in future newsletters.

Looking forward to seeing you all at the Platform Office this coming Thursday at 2pm, and the week after at St Winnow at 10am.

Best wishes

Peter

Update  5th FEBRUARY 2016

Dear Photography Group members,

We had a good evening in Looe last week, with some evening/night-time photography. A few of us stayed on for an enjoyable pub meal.

As regards forthcoming Platform Office meetings, I have suggested perhaps doing some practical work and will bring along some items for tabletop photography for the March meeting, so bring along your camera and tripod that week and I will try and remember to bring along some lights.

For the April Platform Office meeting, Malcolm has kindly offered to give us another talk on using Lightroom.

For future field trips, our next one on Thursday 25th February will be at St Winnow Church, meeting at 10am. A field trip sheet is attached.

We talked about a day out with David Chapman at Windmill Farm on The Lizard, and I have provisionally booked this for Thursday 4th August. David has suggested an early start (I mean very early start), or possibly a two-part start, say, one at 6am and another starting at 10am. Alternatively, we could all meet there at 9am. Please let me have your thoughts on this.

Marion has suggested a possible trip in November to Westonbirt Arboretum. It is possible the Newquay U3A Photography Group would be interested in joining us if we book a coach, as no doubt will other groups (such as our Lostwithiel U3A 'Garden Visits' group). I suggest we verify the date of this nearer the time, as it may be better to go earlier in November, depending on the progress of the tree colour.

Claire, who helps me out with drawing work in the office, is a freelance photographer who would like to start doing teaching/workshops. Here is a link to her website: http://lle-photography.co.uk  I have suggested she use us as guinea pigs so this could be our July or September field trip. I will keep you posted.

I am therefore looking to fill our field trip outings for March, July, September and October. If anybody would like to take on these dates, or give suggestions, please let me know.

Don't forget it is the Lostwithiel Area U3A open day on Saturday 13th February. Space will be limited but if you bring along some framed photographs we will do our best to make sure everyone's work is displayed at some point.

In the meantime, look forward to seeing you on the 13th at the U3A Open Day, on the 18th at the Platform Office, and the 25th at St Winnow.

Best wishes

Peter

Update  27th JANUARY 2016

Dear Photography Group members,

Just a reminder that we have an evening field trip in Looe tomorrow. A quick check on BBC Weather suggests we may be lucky.

Also the Lostwithiel Area U3A Groups Open Day is on Saturday 13th February. As noted in my previous newsletter, please bring along any photographs but starting at 9:30am, not 9:00am as I had originally suggested.

We had a super weekend in Bristol, eight of us from the group going. Good company, a super hotel, excellent food and lots of photographs between the tea and coffee stops. It was very much enjoyed by all and thanks to Lindsay and Marion for arranging.

No doubt another similar break will be arranged in the future and hopefully more of you might come along.

Three pictures taken by Peter may be viewed via this link,   this link and this link

Some photos taken by Lindsay around Bristol may be viewed via this link

A couple of Marion's photos available here and here

I look forward to seeing you tomorrow and then at our next meeting at the Platform Office on Thursday 18th February.

Our field trip on Thursday 25th February will be to St Winnow Church to photograph the interior (including medieval pews, early-Tudor stained glass, etc.) and perhaps followed by a walk along the river. This has been arranged by Marion and she has spoken to the vicar who is happy for us to do this.

Looking at tide times, Marion has suggested we start at 10am and field trip sheet is attached.

Best wishes

Peter

Update  23rd JANUARY 2016

Dear Photography Group members,

We had a great meeting last Thursday at the platform and once again thank you to all who brought photographs along, and to Caroline for her talk on garden photography.

There is a U3A event in the Church Rooms on 13th February. This is to publicise the U3A locally and each of the groups will have space to display, although because of the large number of groups it will not be a huge amount of space.

It would be great if we could put on a good show and I would suggest bringing along any photographs, particularly if you have framed pictures from last year's annual exhibition. As noted we will not have a huge amount of space but we can rotate photographs to give everyone a good chance.

The event is from 10:30am until 12pm but I will get there for 9am to start setting up, so any of you who are able to bring photographs along on that morning between 9am-10am, please do.

If you are not able to come along on the day but would like to show some photographs, get them to me beforehand and I will take them to the event.

If some of you can spare the time to stay on during the morning, we can give as much attention as possible to those visiting and maybe recruit some more members.

At this week's meeting we discussed the possible day out with David Chapman, and the favourite choice would be to go to Windmill Farm on The Lizard in August, so I will contact David and finalise a date. There seemed to be a preference for this to be on a Monday, so I will see what I can do. We will need to pay David, probably about £10 each (as per the Lands End trip) but this will be excellent value and I am sure those of you who went to Lands End will agree.

As regards forthcoming events at Platform Office meetings, there is a lot of interest in using Lightroom. Malcolm has again kindly offered to give us a talk on it. Another possibility would be to do some tabletop photography, so one of these events will be next month and the other the month after. I will arrange a time with Malcolm.

Thank you to those who put down ideas for the field trips calendar for 2016, and a copy of the events so far is attached. If anyone else would like to take up some of the dates then please let me know.

We have a field trip this coming Thursday 28th January in the evening for some night time photography in Looe, meeting at 4pm in the car park (Details here). I have not yet organised a field trip for February but will keep you posted.

Keep taking photographs

Best wishes

Peter

Update  7th JANUARY 2016

Dear Photography Group members, First of all, Caroline and I would like to wish you all a very happy and prosperous New Year with plenty of photographic opportunities. I saw many of you at David Chapman's talk at the U3A general meeting on Monday 4th January , and as usual David was
thoroughly entertaining, including creative knitwear (as featured, click on picture for larger view). David has offered to give us another day with the photography group, and has suggested the following possibilities:
1. butterflies and flowers and Upton Towans in mid - July (could include the silver - studded blue butterflies mentioned in his talk.) 2. visit Levant and search for heather, which could include the Botallack engine houses, in late August 3. insect and flower photography at Chyverton, near Truro, or Windmill Farm on the Lizard, in August. We could discuss these options at our next Platform Office meeting, so I can confirm a date and location with David.
Therefore, our following meetings are: Thursday 21st January - usual meeting at the Platform Office at 2pm Sunday 24th - Tuesday 26th January - weekend trip to Bristol Thursday 28th January - a field trip for night photography. For the 28th January field trip, it was after discussion with various members we have agreed to go to Looe again, and a field trip sheet for thi s is attached. Hope to see you all on the 21st at the Platform Office Best wishes Peter
