JULY   2018
**********
It was good having 18 members this month planning, organising and socialising over refreshments at the Royal Oak.    Ann gave a glowing report on Wildworks '100Unearth' at Heligan, Jenny offered to get tickets but with only three performances left, and no previous response due to it being a promenade event we didn't get there.  Next years event perhaps?
Today, in lovely sunshine, we had a cliff-top picnic followed by Global Theatre Co's version of A Servant of Two Masters at the Minack. Our thanks to our drivers for making possible this super trip.
Future plans for AUGUST shown in earlier months meetings are Steel Magnolias, 4th,   Jazz Cafe's 'Sultans', 18th,   Cherry Orchard, 22nd,   Sam Kelly/Wadebridge Folk Festival 27th.  Kneehigh's UBU seemed unsuitable as a group trip but a few people are going independently.
SEPTEMBER offers History Boys 3rd,   Warhorse 6th,   Wipers Times 15th,  Swan Lake 22 & 29th
to which we add:-
8th,  'Slidebelly' folk/Bluegrass at Lostwithiel church rooms - buy own tickets when available.
13th,  La Boheme at St Austell cinema, to be discussed at next meeting as we don't have drivers and the trains are not good times.
21st,  Boogie Night (Dino Batiste) at Lerryn - buy own tickets from C.R.B.O.  On line or by phone/personally at St Austell or Bodmin T.I.Cs.
OCTOBER offers two new events:-
4th, The Comedy About a Bank Robbery at TRP ( same company that gave us the hilarious Play that went Wrong)  Helen will be booking this very soon.
18th,  National Theatre's Macbeth at TRP.  Contact Ann H. urgently (Mon 24th) as tickets are selling fast, or add yourself in by buying your own nearby to join the group.
And in NOVEMBER Annie has offered to reserve a block of seats for Show of Hands, plus guests at TRP.  Put your names on her list soon.
So lots of choice for us all with more to come at our August meeting 11am at Royal Oak

JUNE  2018
We searched through brochures and are now off to Wadebridge Folk Festival on Aug 27th to see Sam Kelly and The Lost Boys - Ann H. arranging.
Also Matilda at Theatre Royal, Plymouth,  a rather expensive event, Feb 14th '19 - Annie is reserving seats for this.
Note that Jazz Cafe have booked The Sultans Aug 18th which we look forward to enjoying.
July's meeting  Thurs 19th will be at 11am.

Two trips to Sterts theatre are now planned, with optional pre-performance meal.
Steel Magnolias on Aug 4th, contact Carol
History Boys on Sept 3rd, contact Jenny

The proposed trip to Kneehigh Asylum has been cancelled as it proved unsuitable.
Please Note - our next meeting is on June 21st at the later time of 11 am.

April   2018
Those who went to Hall for Cornwall to explore the theatre and learn about the new redesigned HFC found it a fascinating afternoon.  There is one more opportunity for those who missed it before they close for two years, on May 10 at 2pm.
Sterts is also refurbishing backstage and replacing the roof, but hopefully offering productions again in August.
Our chosen trips this meeting are:-
June 5th    Oscar Wilde's  An Ideal Husband live streamed to St Austell cinema.  Jenny arranging
''   9th    English Songs (E.C. Bach choir) at St Germans.  Anne F arranging
July 24th   Minack present Servant to Two Masters, matinee, by car this year.  Contact Ann H
Aug  10th  Kneehigh back at the Asylum at Heligan!  Option of supper first and possibly using Lerryn minibus.   Be aware that this production, UBU Karaoke, is a promenade performance.     Details from Carol W
Aug 22nd  Miracle return to Restormel Castle with The Cherry Orchard.  Annie S arranging.

Please Note:-  May meeting is a week later than usual on 24th May.

REPORTON VISIT TO TR2 OF 6THMARCH 2018

Tenmembers of the group made their way to Plymouth to visit TR2, thepurpose built Production and Learning Centre for The Theatre Royalsituated in
Cattedownby the river Plym.Theextensive rehearsal facilities and 2000 sqm of workshop and wardrobespace provide unrivalled construction, production and costumeservices for the theatre industry. TheTheatre Royal Plymouth is one of the country’s finest regionaltheatres and their production services have an excellent reputation. They work with some of the world’s best designers, producers andproduction managers and deliver high quality sets, props and costumesfor TRP’s own productions and co-productions as well as for otherproducers throughout the UK and Europe.

Aswe entered the reception area, we were rather intrigued by its twoexhibits, a very large bird and the plywood outline of a rocket. Our very helpful guide cleared up the mystery:

Exhibit1: the large bird had been used in a production: it is made out ofreal feathers and during the production had a motor which enabled itto move around the stage - it is now static.

Exhibit2: the Russian rocket that carried British Astronaut Tim Peake intospace could be landing in Plymouth. The city has been shortlisted tohost the space craft as part of an exciting UK tour. If selected, the exhibition which will include a state-of-the-art virtual realityexperience developed by Samsung will stay in Plymouth for 3 monthswith the opening ceremony held in August 2018. Venues which havesubmitted a bid include TR2, the Royal William Yard and theUniversity.

Aftera visit to each of the three rehearsal rooms, our tour gave us aninsight into the different aspects of the Production Services:

  • Costume - Although the wardrobe team was regrettably not present, we were able to admire the quality of their work as we examined some costumes displayed on mannequins.

  • Props

  • Set Construction and Assembly – the team was hard at work including two members of staff who were painting a backdrop for a production which will be staged in another regional theatre.

  • Drawing office – the team create designs from 1 in 25 scale models given to them by production companies

Wewere allowed in the costume store: what a treat! For those of usinvolved in amateur dramatics, it was like being in a sweets shop! But we could not leave with any of those treats…

Welearned lots of facts on our tour, including:

  • The floor space of the medium rehearsal room is equal to that of The Drum

  • The floor space of the large rehearsal room is equal to that of The Lyrics

  • Each wig costs £1,000 – they are washed dried and reshaped after each production and last a year.

  • The average cost of a costume is £1,000. They are washed or steam cleaned after each production

Wewere able to reflect on our informative tour as we enjoyed a creamtea.

Theatre Group Christmas Lunch

The Theatre Group meets on the third Thursday of the month at the Royal Oak to plan its
numerous outings.  Did you know that we organise an average of 75 outings a year?  This year, we agreed that our December meeting would be sweet and short and followed by a Christmas lunch.

A big thank you to the staff at the Royal Oak for all the effort that went into  making the tables look very festive - the best we had seen so far this year- and for cooking a delicious and plentiful Christmas lunch.  We all enjoyed it!
